Leandro da Ponte
The Charity of St. Antoninus

End of the 16th century
Church of Santa Corona, Vicenza, Italy

In this painting the archbishop has set aside his mitre while he works to distribute food to the needy in Florence, who were especially numerous during the plagues and famines of the mid-15th century (Butler, I, 263-64). His black and white habit identifies him as a Dominican.
